Fun with Lights in Times Square

Times Square from the top of the dream hotel in mid-town minhatten

I grew up in New Jersey in the shadow of NYC, so I have been to Times Square (begrudgingly) many times. I say begrudgingly because it is about as touristy as you can get, and doesn’t have as much depth as the rest of the city. So when I got a chance to go out there on a work event, and got put in a hotel next to Times Square, I wanted to get some photos that were a little different. You’ve seen a million photos of times square (I’m uploading one I took from the hotel rooftop here), but I wanted to capture not the place itself, but the essence of what Times Square feels like in your head. I’m talking about the bright multi-colored chaos, not the people hawking CDs (still?!), or creepy Elmos.

What is interesting about Times Square though, is that the place you envision in your head is actually kind of hard to fine. Sure there are lots of bright lights, but the neon lights I imagine are actually kind of hard to find on ground level. In fact, nearly all the interesting lights and colors come from above, and I was looking to capture that on my co-workers faces!

I finally was able to find some amazing lights at the times square NYPD station, which has some very nice brightly colored American flag lights. It’s here where we got to have a blast taking some very moody photos. I hope you enjoy them as much as I had fun taking them!
